Guido Zambelis - April 20, 2008 04:16 PM (GMT)
Is it necessary to publish that list of email addresses?

Jean Michel Leclerc - April 20, 2008 04:38 PM (GMT)
Yes, so that one can ensure that the email address to be used for verification is correct. Remember, everyone is entitled to an 'Alexandrian' email address, if they don't like using their personal address.

This is the only easy way of doing it. It is also something of a necessity after the recent legal action taken over the Baudrix Election.

John_Carmichael - April 20, 2008 06:10 PM (GMT)
It doesn't say you have to publish email address though Lord LeClerc.

Jean Michel Leclerc - April 20, 2008 06:21 PM (GMT)
I was following the Emperor's precedent from the General Elections. I'm not willing to compromise anything administerially in the up-coming elections.

Rest-assured the list will be removed as soon as soon the election commences. Meanwhile, the option of an Alexandrian email is there for the taking if people want it.

Pete James - April 20, 2008 09:51 PM (GMT)
Can my email be replaced as pete <at> micras <dot> org in the above post for Anti Spam Purposes?

Guido Zambelis - April 20, 2008 10:17 PM (GMT)
That the addresses were ever there is enough for the spam bots. Does Alexandria have any privacy laws?

HIH Prince Enrique Portela - April 20, 2008 10:29 PM (GMT)
The whole thing is to prevent any more pointless lawsuits. If you'd like your email changed to [at] [dot] please request it. Thats about all we can do.

respectfully,

Liam Sinclair - April 20, 2008 10:52 PM (GMT)
Might be too late as I've noticed a 300% increase in spam entering my junk mail folder, but could you change my email to a suitable form to prevent spam bots? Thanks.

Jean Michel Leclerc - April 21, 2008 04:37 AM (GMT)
One day, someone will say, "thanks Jean-Mi for taking the initiative and setting the ball rolling". Interesting that I've had a 0% increase in spam.

Emperor Edgard II - April 21, 2008 02:55 PM (GMT)
Thanks Jean, for getting the ball rolling when I was too drunk or hungover to do it. I really appreciate it. ^_^

Jean, did you get this info from the last census? I'll go back and check to see who is from what province, so I can create a new electoral roll based on where people live. That is always more convenient. (Also, I know there's at least one more person that lives in Baudrix.)

(This is hillarious. First people sue to get the Electoral Roll published, then they don't want it published? Classic.)

And the law that requires the publishing of the Electoral Roll is the Code of Electoral Law:

QUOTE
3. Roll of citizens. The Ministry of Interior must provide the State Electoral Commission with a roll of citizens (with e-mail addresses for each provided) eligible to vote, in order to set up the polls as soon as possible. The roll of citizens will then be published in the State Electoral Commission (without e-mail addresses) 10 days before an election. The Electoral Commissioner must ensure that no entry on the register is contrary to law.
4. Current information provided by voter. Each voter must ensure that their email address and details are current.
5. Objections to roll of citizens. Any objections must be heard by the Electoral Commissioner within five days of publication of the electoral roll. The Electoral Commissioner's decision with respect to such objection is subject to judicial review.

I see the possibility for a nice class action here :P

It is all based on the last census, including anyone who has come back from LOA after that census closed.

Thanks, YIM, for confirming that I was doing my job properly!

HIH Prince Enrique Portela - April 22, 2008 03:03 PM (GMT)
Excellent work, Lord Leclerc!

Just doing my job Guido!

freddyfrancois - April 23, 2008 10:01 AM (GMT)
The law doesn't say the Minister of Interior needs to transmit this information through a public forum post. Perhaps an email from the Minister with email-adresses could suffize, after which the SEC publishes the electoral roll without email-adresses.

As for the accuracy of email-adresses: each citizen should take every census as an opportunity to communicate the right email-adress to the Minister and the SEC.

Guido Zambelis - April 23, 2008 06:22 PM (GMT)
I don't think email addresses will have changed between now and March, and even if they have, the non-receipt of the Demochoice email will cause wannabe voters to communicate an accurate email address to the Ministry. I trust this will not happen again ;)

Well, as you can see from the previous censuses, often people don't provide the information! As for posting it in a 'public' forum, the SEC forum is supposed to be a citizens only forum.

I'd love to know who all of you guys are hiding from.

Guido, this will happen again, as I'm not breaking any laws doing it and the quickest way of doing things. It is the job of the SEC to republish the roll without email addresses, not the Interior Ministry. ;)

Guido Zambelis - April 23, 2008 07:14 PM (GMT)
A sensible interpretation of the law would stop the publication. 'Provide' and 'Publish' are two different words, with different meanings. The Provision of the email addresses should be confidential, and Publication should be just that.

Jean Michel Leclerc - April 24, 2008 09:40 AM (GMT)
But everyone is required by law to fill in the census form, which everyone can see, and give the IM an email address. If you want to prohibit the publication of email addresses then propose a new law.

Anyway, Guido, is your email address correct on this list?

John_Carmichael - April 24, 2008 02:35 PM (GMT)
The law doesn't, I don't think, require you to fill in the census.

Nowhere does it say 'in public' ;)

Btw my email address is correct, thank you.

Nowhere does it say 'in private' ;)

And if your email address is correct then why don't you stop whining and get over the fact that this roll has been posted, with your email address on, no laws having been broken, and start posting something more worthwhile, as opposed to wasting Interior Ministry and SEC time?
