Here I am.

HIH Prince Enrique Portela - March 27, 2008 07:11 PM (GMT)
Ok. Lets begin.

I'll introduce a topic and each candidate will submit their positions and their thoughts on the matter pertaining to Alexandria of course. Those who are opposed or in support will speak on the subject. Thats pretty much what we'll do for the rest of the topics.

The floor is open and you may begin. The first topic will be THE ECONOMY. All other candidates yet to sign in may still participate on the subject. (I'm just making sure at least some do participate)

Topic 1: THE ECONOMY IN ALEXANDRIA

francotorres - March 27, 2008 07:32 PM (GMT)
If I may make a suggestion, would it not be easier to have a separate topic for each topic. owing to the nature of the internet and time zone differences this may make it easier.

hard_right - March 27, 2008 08:46 PM (GMT)

may I sign in still? i have been busy with work lately.

Maximiliano de Alba - March 27, 2008 10:12 PM (GMT)
Here I am too.

HIH Prince Enrique Portela - March 28, 2008 02:51 PM (GMT)
Theres no problem. I just wanted the majority of the participants to sign in to begin.

The first topic is: THE ECONOMY
The first question goes out to Mssr. Poiters. Your Grace, What is your position on the matter?

Matthieu Poiters - March 28, 2008 04:07 PM (GMT)

i believe like all my fellow conservatives in a platform that we set almost 3 years ago. i believe in competition and the right to compete wherever in micronationalism. Alexandria can and has all the necessary resources to do that. A free economy with minimal government interference is essential to a growing economy. building an innovative Economy to compete in the Micronational World is essential for an economy here in Alexandria. A working economy will lead to activity in Alexandria something I can see our nation is seeking. respecting each individual’s economic rights and establish government policy in accordance to such economic rights is also important.
The conservatives will continue to focus on introducing legislation setting up Alexandrian Trade Offices in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in other micronations to attract foreign investment to Alexandria. thats my position on the subject. i yield.

Poiters. MP for SM.

HIH Prince Enrique Portela - March 29, 2008 01:48 AM (GMT)
Chamicheal and Bertrand, your positions are welcomed.

All candidates are welcomed to submit their positions now

Julien Rosseau - March 29, 2008 05:21 AM (GMT)
I'm in...late because i just registered

Nicholas Bertrand - March 29, 2008 09:59 AM (GMT)
Well I tend to agree with Mssr Poiters.

I am a firm believer in the efficiency of capitalism and competition. I believe that Alexandria has the capability to have a real working economy and if elected I would ensure that our system was based on the free market with minimal state interference.

I believe it is really important to reward rather than punish people for being successful. I would support tax cuts for small businesses and businesses that are expanding abroad to enable Alexandria to maintain it's position as a superpower and to maintain constant economic growth.

I also want to see widespread property ownership across the nation. I feel this will be an important part of any working economy that we create and it will give all Alexandrians an added sense of security, pride and belonging.

I yield.

freddyfrancois - March 29, 2008 10:40 AM (GMT)
Mr. Poitiers, mr. Bertrand,

It is apparently clear that all the major political parties in Alexandria support the development of a working economy and that everyone agrees to take the principles of the free market as guidelines in the establishment thereof.

The debate lies elsewhere. The question is when our government will implement what has been agreed and whether our government will give execution to the projected plans.

I hear that the Conservatives will continue to focus on introducing legislation in this matter.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Since I have become a member of parliament and since my appointment as deputy-minister of finance, *no single* bill has been introduced by this government with regard to the economy. The only bill pending is a bill of my hand, proposing some changes to the Economy Re-establishment Act.

There has been *no single* debate in the Imperial Council of Finance, a council of which I am member and have been the only one to lay down my ideas, oon after my appointment.

As a deputy-minister I have received *no single* instruction or request to do whatever could be necessary for the develop of our national economy.

The time of declarations of intent has passed.

In my campaign for prime minister I have already explained what I believe would be good measures:
- stimulating private enterprise, not by giving subsidies or tax cuts, but by a government creating demand on the market;
- an absolute *no* to income taxation as long as private sector employment is not a realistic part of our economy.
- preventing the "sinking of money" by encouraging our citizens to consume or invest in a manner beneficial to them and our economy.
- creating a fashionable legal framework for property and contracts, the backbones for commerce and enterprise.

As for Alexandria's economic dominance abroad and foreign relations in this matter: Let's not fool ourselves.

If Alexandria wants to establish itself as an economic power, it will first need to realize a domestic economy which is self-sustainable! Then, if opportunity permits, Alexandrian companies could look to expand abroad, assuming that other micronations also have a working economy.

Moreover, I do not see how our nation could attract foreign investment as long as there are no other micronations which have a working economy based on the same ideas and principles and as long as no system of currency exchange has been agreed between Alexandria and foreign nations.

Nonetheless, I would be in favour of cooperating with other micronations in establishing an intermicronational economic system. However, my experience learns that such cooperation is difficult to realize and even more difficult to maintain over a longer period of time.

Therefore, I repeat, let's focus on Alexandria's domestic economy before spreading wild dreams of economic world power.

John_Carmichael - March 29, 2008 02:33 PM (GMT)
Mssr. Poitiers and Mssr. François,

I agree with you both, though I'm inclined to support my colleague for the obvious reason. Economies don't happen overnight and we need to put the work in for this. If Alexandria is to become an economic powerhouse abroad, we must indeed focus on creating a workable economy here. Yet, we must almost take the lead. Look at the success of the old Gotzborg and the continued success of the Riponians in there manufacturing industry. We should seek to emulate and better their achievements and I believe we can.

Another thing we should look at is becoming a founding member of some sort of international banking system. We've lead the way countless times in micronational affairs, so I think we should do so again. Only when micronations create a standard banking system, better than the old aerlig MX2, can we seek to open up our economy to the world. We need to create a system where money can flow and I would support, as I'm sure both of you would, Alexandria's Government taking in the initiative and using its influence to make this happen.

Julien Rosseau - March 29, 2008 04:06 PM (GMT)
I whole-heartly agree with Mssr. Bertrand.

I also think that with a stronger economy comes stronger liability to keep a regular intrest in it, so that it does not become a beast of burden to the citizens.

The system should use all our resorces efficiently and enviromently friendly, so in that, we can make our economy stronger.

We should also ally with nations with many resorces so that we can exchange more to get more.

I yield to the floor

HIH Prince Enrique Portela - March 31, 2008 03:24 PM (GMT)
If there is nothing else to discuss on the subject, we'll be moving on.

Security in Alexandria
Immigration
Provincial Status
Education in Alexandria
Economy
Political Party Regulation
Electoral Issues

Julien Rosseau - March 31, 2008 08:41 PM (GMT)
I assume you mean immigration ;)

In my past experiances as an immigration officer in Amokolia, I learned that you can not let just anyone in. I cite these examples:

1) Once there was a potential immigrant claiming to be a nigerian who wanted money from the Royal Treasury, which was supposed to help his internet in nigeria, but all he really wanted was to steal our money. (419 Scam)

2) There was a socialist who joined our nation, and later crashed our forums and website in order to incite a revolution and make our nation a republic.

So we must impose stricter immigration laws and background checks to keep Alexandria running smoothly
