Title: Speech before Parliament

Jon - December 5, 2006 12:17 AM (GMT)
Your Highness, Mr. Speaker, Members of Parliament, Ministers, and citizens of Alexandria, it is an honor to have been elected to serve as the next Prime Minister of the Empire of Alexandria, and I present myself before you as my part of my duties as the Prime Minister.

My thanks, while overdue and no less sincere, go to Minister Frias and the vigorous campaign that he and the Alexandrian Conservative Party ran. I pledge to work closely with the ACP and the AAP within Parliament to get work done for the people, and I would encourage all to cooperate as well. I’d also like to thank my supporters, without you, none of this would have been possible. Finally, my thanks goes to my family who has always been by my side as I have served this Empire for much of my adult life.

At this time, I submit for Parliament’s approval my nomination for Minister of Defense, Jacques Beaufort. Mr. Beaufort is an extraordinary man with extraordinary talent who has served this Empire with honor and dignity. I have confidence in him and his abilities and I look forward to working with Mr. Beaufort as the next Minister of Defense.

For far too long, there has been a lack of work done in Alexandria. Many of the ministries are in disarray and need the necessary leadership to repair the damage that has remained present for too long.

As Prime Minister, I will work closely with each and every minister to make the necessary changes to better the ministries to work for the people. When necessary, Parliament and the Emperor will be consulted and asked for their advice and consent.

I am announcing a major overhaul within the Ministry of Defense. Its organization is outdated and difficult to understand. I hope that through working with Minister Designate Beaufort and Prince Enrique, we will be able to reorganize the Ministry of Defense to be able to better defend the people of this great and noble Empire.

It was a great day when our Empire adopted our current Constitution. It brought about an organization that had been lacking, and unfortunately, it has many flaws that must be fixed. When I served as the Judicial Member of Parliament, I submitted an amendment which remedied one of the several problems. In order to remedy the remaining issues within the Constitution, I am announcing the creation of the Commission on Constitutional Reform.

The purpose of this commission will be to examine the Constitution in its entirety and to make recommendations as to how to make our Constitution a better document. Upon the completion of its task, I will submit their recommendations to Parliament for its approval.

The composition of this Commission will be non-partisan and representative of each of the branches of government, legislative, executive, and judicial.

Justice Jean Carmichael, as the Commission member from the Judiciary, will chair the Commission. I have asked that Speaker Pete James and Mr. Matthieu Poiters serve on the Commission as members from Parliament. Minister Jose Frias and Minister Designate Jacques Beaufort will serve on the Commission as members from the Cabinet.

Alexandria is a great nation that can aspire to something even greater. We have the potential to do so and it is my hope that we can make a better Alexandria for its citizens to live.

As an empire, we have achieved much, but there is still yet so much more that waits to be done. With your help, we can make Alexandria a better place for all.

Thank you.

*also claps, and notices the standing ovation to the Prime Minister's speech*

I am honoured to have been chosen to serve in your cabinet. I am only awaiting the confirmation vote in Parliament. When you asked me about being the Minister of Defence I had two concerns: To begin with was my little experience in the area, I asked if Prince Enrique could be my deputy minister, and I thank you for allowing; I hope the Prince will also agree. The second concern was that I would have wanted to give the Ministry a major "reconstructive surgery", but now that you have expressed the same concern, I am most relieved. I hope to work on this issue.

I am also delighted to have been asked to be a member of the Commission on Constitutional Reform.

Sincerely,

HH Grand Duke Jacques de Beaufort
